On the trail of Count Ugolino...

This is truly a unique opportunity to discover one of the most intriguing and mystery-filled stories of Pisa: the story of Count Ugolino della Gherardesca.

Making the visit unique will be the guide who, in the guise of an actor complete with ancient clothes and cloaks, will explain the story of this character.

The story of Ugolino della Gherardesca is a tragic episode from Dante Alighieri's "Divine Comedy," specifically from Inferno, the first part of the epic poem.
Ugolino was an Italian nobleman from Pisa who lived in the 13th century, whose events are described in Canto XXXIII of the Inferno.

According to Dante's depiction, Ugolino della Gherardesca was accused of treason in Pisa and imprisoned along with his sons and grandsons in the Tower of Hunger. The story goes that they were left to starve to death, and Dante meets Ugolino in the ninth circle of Hell, where traitors are punished.

In the Divine Comedy it is said that he resorted to cannibalism out of desperation, even eating the flesh of his own children. This disturbing image serves as a powerful and harrowing representation of the consequences of betrayal and the extremes to which human suffering can lead.

The story will be illustrated at the highlights of the city; it will feature Knights' Square, as well as Cathedral Square and the medieval alleys of the city's historic center.
