Italy (Pisa)

Day 1:
March 23, 2023 - Thursday
Arrival in Pisa
From 2.00 pm Check in at the 3-star hotel located in the historic center of the Royal Victoria (or similar), room assignment. Dinner in a typical restaurant.

Day 2:
March 24, 2023 - Friday (Pisan New Year's Eve)
Breakfast at the hotel.
Pisa celebrates the entrance into the new year in 2023, without the usual crowd of tourists and citizens who enter into the Cathedral to participate at the ceremony. At noon, only an institutional city delegation (representatives of the Gioco del Ponte, the Regatta of the Maritime Republics, the Palio di San Ranieri and other associations that gave life to the day) will be able to observe the passage of the sun ray from a window in the central nave that illuminates the shelf in the shape of an egg on the pillar next to the famous pulpit by Giovanni Pisano. The celebration of prayers for Pisa will take place starting at 11.30.
Our program includes at 10 am the meeting with the tour guide and visit of the historic center. We will leave from Ponte di Mezzo in the direction of Borgo Stretto, where we could see Casa Ammannati, the birthplace of Galileo Galilei. Continuing along via dei Mille we will reach Piazza dei Cavalieri, where we can admire the Palazzo della Carovana (seat of the Scuola Normale Superiore), the characteristic Palazzo dell'Orologio (composed of the union of the Torre delle Sette Vie and the Torre della Muda, the latter called also "Tower of hunger" since Count Ugolino della Gherardesca was imprisoned there, accused of treason together with his children and grandchildren) and the sixteenth-century Church of the Knights of Santo Stefano. We will continue until we reach the Piazza dei Miracoli with its grandeur of the Baptistery, the Cathedral and the Bell Tower (well known as the "Leaning Tower").
Return to the hotel.

Historical Notes. The Pisan New Year's Eve is a tradition that has its roots in the Middle Ages. Since the tenth century the Pisans made the beginning of the year coincide with the Annunciation (and therefore the Incarnation of Jesus), that is nine months before December 25. Thus was obtained the Pisan Year ab Incarnatione Domini (or Christi). The first document dated in Pisan style that attests it dates back to 985. This starting date of the year remained in force for centuries. But in 1750, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Francesco I of Lorraine, ordered that in all Tuscan states the new year should have started on January 1. Even Pisans had to conform to the use of the Gregorian calendar. Only in the 80s of the twentieth century, the city returned to celebrate the anniversary with cultural initiatives. Despite Covid19, also this year Pisa does not give up the appointment with its history and celebrates the transition to the 2023 Pisan style, nine months before of the rest of the world.
