Program

Day 1:
Arrival in Casciana Terme, a typical spa village in Tuscany, and accommodation in the hotel.
Possibility of bike rental.

Day 2:
The 79km route (difference in height + 1000m) along the Olive Oil Route of Monti Pisani will take us to tackle the challenging ascent of Monte Serra from the Pisan side of Calci which we will reach after just over 30 km of the Pisan plain of the Arno heading straight towards the northern part of Monte Pisano which divides the cities of Pisa and Lucca.
Calci is famous for its wonderful Certosa and it is immersed in a unique environmental context, a sort of natural basin with man-made terraced slopes planted with olive trees, from which a very fine extra virgin olive oil is obtained. The 8.4km ascent is immediately challenging and exceeds 10% in the village of Tre Colli and then leaves some breathing space in the locality of San Bernardo where the hermitage built before the year one thousand is visible ... you continue to climb often with double-digit slopes that also recur in the last km before the brow to Buti at the bar - restaurant i Cristalli at about 650mt of altitude.
In the panoramic descent towards Buti the view sweeps eastwards towards the provinces of Lucca, Pistoia and Florence where you can see the profiles of the Pizzorne, the Pistoiese Mountains and the Montalbano and once we arrive in the village we leave it behind, climbing towards the hamlet Castel di Nocco which, given the wealth of olive groves, reminds us that we are cycling on the Monti Pisani Oil Road. A few more bends and you will see
The Rocca del Brunelleschi and the tower houses of the medieval village of Vicopisano which was bitterly disputed between Pisa, Lucca and Florence for its strategic position: the Florentines won it in 1406 after a long siege. Unlike other villages razed to the ground and with castles dismantled, here it was decided to strengthen the fortified complex with the new walls and precisely the Rocca. Take your time for a short visit going up to the Palazzo Pretorio, then back in the saddle to cross the Arno in Calcinaia, reach Pontedera with its Piaggio Museum and then return to Casciana Terme.
